Common Acid Reflux Causes
There are various acid reflux causes that lead to this very common problem problem. Understanding what leads to reflux is the first step towards curing it. There are certain abnormal conditions of the stomach that may be one of the causes of acid reflux. For example, a hiatal hernia can be a contributing factor to reflux problems. This type of hernia is a leading cause of acid reflux but it can be fixed with dietary changes and occasionally, a surgical procedure.
Pregnancy is also very often causing acid reflux, especially in the second half of pregnancy, when baby gets bigger. The expectant mother may find herself toting a bottle of antacids everywhere she goes and avoiding certain foods. Even if you are not pregnant, the avoidance of certain foods is a good idea. Acidic foods like citrus fruits and tomatoes can be one of the main causes of acid reflux. Peppermint, chocolate and alcoholic beverages may also aggravate the problem. If you simply cannot stay away from your favorite foods and drinks at least enjoy them in strict moderation and never right before bedtime.
Smoking can cause acid reflux as well. It triggers the problem in several ways. First of all, it reduces the amount of salivation. Smoking also causes damage to the mucus membranes which are important in the reduction of reflux. It weakens the lower esophageal sphincter muscle and actually increases the amount of acid produced. And let's not forget about the gigantic risks of emphysema and lung cancer. So if you still smoke now is the perfect time to quit. Sometimes, that pesky acid reflux can be a sign of a more serious condition known as GERD.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is abbreviated as GERD. It is a chronic condition. Many of the acid reflux causes are also possible causes of GERD. Other GERD causes include certain types of medications, eating before lying down and being overweight or obese. If you suspect this disease might be what you have, see your doctor or ear, nose and throat specialist immediately. The sooner the problem is diagnosed and treated, the sooner you can find relief. Also, early detection and treatment helps prevent future complications. While rare, esophageal cancer can result from untreated GERD.
