What You Should Know About Bile Acid Reflux
The patient suffering of bile acid reflux experiences a regurgitation of hot, sour liquid into the throat or mouth. Bile and acid are not the same, so the conditions of bile reflux and acid reflux are two separate ones than can occur at the same time. Acid is produced by cells inside the stomach for the purposes of digestion. Bile is made by the liver, and also plays a role in the digestive process. While it can be difficult to distinguish acid reflux from bile reflux there are a few differences in the two.
The number one distinguishing factor of bile reflux is a pain in the upper abdominal region. This pain is caused by inflammation of the stomach by the bile. Other symptoms can include heartburn, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, cough and hoarse voice. A person may have one or more of these symptoms. As previously mentioned, you can suffer from both types of reflux at the same time which can be especially uncomfortable.
Now that you know symptoms of bile reflux, it may help to learn a bit about the causes of this problem. A peptic ulcer can be a leading factor when it comes to bile reflux. Damage to a certain valve during surgeries like gastric bypass can cause an increase in the problem. In addition, people who have had gall bladder surgery are more likely to suffer from bile reflux compared to those who have not.
There are various tests to determine this diagnosis, with the most common being the endoscopy. During this procedure, a small tube with a tiny camera attached is inserted down your throat to view your esophagus and even see if you suffer from peptic ulcers. Some endoscopies collect tissue to be tested for potentially cancerous or precancerous changes in the cells.
For bile acid reflux, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be used to reduce symptoms. There are also surgical procedures that can cure the problem. Simple lifestyle modifications can help as well. Don't smoke, eat small meals rather than large ones, avoid acidic and spicy foods, avoid stress and never go to bed right after eating. These simple measures can help prevent the discomfort of bile reflux in some cases.
