Heartburn Acid Reflux Treatment Options

Usually, heartburn and acid reflux goes hand in hand. The reason for this is because with the garden variety case of acid reflux, the burning fluid rises into the esophagus all the way to the chest and sometimes into the throat and even mouth. Heartburn feels like it sounds, a burning pain in the chest. For people unfamiliar with this sensation, it may be mistaken for cardiac pain. When chest pain does arise for the first time, it is better to call for emergency help and be safe than sorry.

Acid reflux indigestion is a common condition. One thing that can cause it is the foods you eat. Tomatoes, citrus fruits, mint, soft drinks and spicy foods are common reflux trigger. If you smoke, quit immediately because not only is it bad for your lungs, it contributes to acid reflux problems. There is no need to eat only bland foods and give up your favorite things, but there are some foods you may want to cut out or reduce. There are all kinds of books on this subject that can help you figure out the difference between acidic foods and non-acidic foods.

Also, chest pain GERD is quite common. GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease and is more chronic than regular acid reflux. People who suffer from GERD may have painful heartburn, but some of them don't. Sometimes symptoms are far more confusing and may include trouble swallowing, the feeling of a lump in the throat, sore throat in the morning and a dry cough. So, a trip to the doctor is essential for diagnosing both acid reflux and GERD. Sometimes an imaging test called an endoscopy will be performed, which captures an image of your esophagus and sometimes inner stomach.

When seeking to cool the pain of heartburn acid reflux, try an antacid like Tums, Rolaids or Milk of Magnesia. If this does not provide relief there are other types of OTC drugs available for heartburn. Then there are PPI drugs, or proton pump inhibitors. These medications include Prevacid and Prilosec. Prilosec is the only former prescription PPI drug available over the counter. Your doctor can prescribe Prevacid or another PPI medication to you in an attempt to lower the amount of acid being produced and prevent painful side effects.
